24 Hours of Sustainability

24 Hours of Sustainability is a documentary series broadcasting conversations, films, games, and educational opportunities around the clock and around the world on Monday, April 22. This collaborative effort, led by Arizona State University and Wells Fargo, will shine a light on projects and people who are making an impact for a sustainable tomorrow.

On Earth Day, beginning at 12:01 midnight EST, we will livestream stories about Sustainability Leaders, Students Making a Difference, Conservation Leaders at Work, Teachers Inspiring Action, and Eco-Heroes Making an Impact. Mary Wenzel is the Head of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility at Wells Fargo. Under her leadership, the company has announced aggressive operational-efficiency goals to be achieved by 2020 and committed to providing $200 billion in financing to environmentally beneficial businesses by 2030.

Nainoa Thompson, Polynesian Voyager

Nainoa Thompson is a Native Hawaiian navigator and President of the Polynesian Voyaging Society. He is the first Hawaiian to practice the ancient Polynesian art of navigation since the 14th century and has created one of the world’s most successful sustainability education programs through his voyages.

Dr. Becky Ball is a soil biogeochemist in desert climates ranging from Arizona to Antarctica. She is also co-creator of the BioArt program that combines the talents of science and art students. Check out how they are using the tiny world below our feet to predict changes in our planet’s climate.

Dr. Kevin Redding from the School of Molecular Sciences has worked to bring his Algae for Energy project into classrooms so teachers and students can replicate the experiment and research and answer their own questions as they go. Finding sustainability solutions through the study of locust swarms

Dr. Arianne Cease runs the world’s largest locust laboratory and was named one of the top 10 most brilliant scientists by Popular Science magazine. Dr Cease discovered that land use can impact the swarming behavior of locusts, which in turn affects food security.

Dr. Beth Polidoro is Director of the Center for Plastics Solutions and studies plastics polution as it relates to sustainable indigenous fisheries, and the sustainability of each community’s livelihood in the face of such pollution.

Charlie Rolsky is a graduate student researching micro plastics and assessing environmental stressors. Using a team-based, collaborative approach he hopes to heal the world’s oceans. See how the community at ASU is facilitating change.

Student Council Sustainability Officers Initiative

The Student Council Sustainability Officers Initiative encourages teachers, school leadership, cities and other community leaders to bring sustainability onto high school campuses through the adoption of Sustainability Officers. This program is supported by ASU’s School of Sustainability. Program Manager, Julia Colbert, created a “Sustainability checklist” used by teachers in the Wells Fargo Regional Teachers’ Academy.

Wells Fargo Environmental Stewards Taking Action – Zero Waste

Anyone who has ever participated in a race event knows they typically generate piles of trash — discarded paper cups, plastic water bottles, snack wrappers, and other debris. The Wells Fargo Charlotte Green Team partnered with Diversity & Inclusion to make their 2018 Diversity Day 5k a zero-waste event.

The school district on Whidbey Island helps teachers with sustainability and community gardens efforts on the island. Learn about workshops and trainings that help teachers to carry out these programs.

The Valencia Newcomer School is committed to combining sustainable efforts with education. Robert and Kathryn are working on the school’s community garden project to bring the classroom outdoors and develop the leadership skills of their students. Wells Fargo Regional Sustainability Teachers’ Academy Alumni: Scales Technology Academy, Tempe

Olivia Gerstein is a librarian, heads up the school garden, and works on climate change education with students at Scales Technology Academy. The Academy has expanded their school garden to include 12 in-ground beds, 12 barrel planters, and 25 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. All 425 of their students are involved in the garden, working on a thriving compost from cafeteria food waste, and incorporating Native American gardening practices.

Eco-Heroes Making an Impact

Wells Fargo Data Analytics Challenge

Listen to the 2018 winners of the Wells Fargo “Analyze This” Team Member Challenge share why the topic of this challenge is important and the outcomes of their work. They used publicly-available data regarding climate change, population growth, consumption habits, and waste output to develop a global pollution index or ratings system, which they then used to predict future pollution.
