Closeup of man holding fishing gearASU Center for Biodiversity Outcome Deputy Director Beth Polidoro and her team recently took part in a study investigating the health implications of eating fish from stock ponds around Phoenix.

According to their research, they found fish containing contaminants such as pesticides, chemicals, arsenic, aluminum and mercury exceeding levels recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Many residents around Phoenix fish in these local lakes and 60 percent of them eat the fish they catch. Polidoro noted “It’s an economical, very cheap source of protein… no one really was monitoring contaminants in the surface waters in Phoenix, and also not in the fish."
