Business, Sustainability and the Bottom Line

Achieving a sustainable future -- a future of universal, intergenerational human well-being -- in a world of 10 billion people will require imagination, ingenuity, collaboration and investment on an unprecedented scale. Business will have a central role to play.

Demographers now estimate that the global population will reach 10 billion by 2050 -- 2.5 billion more than today. These people will overwhelmingly go to developing countries in Africa and Asia, as well as to cities.

Business has a fundamental interest in how these people will live, what jobs they will have, what products they will consume and what kinds of citizens they will make. If 10 billion are to live well, business, civil society, government and academia must find new ways to imagine and collaborate to create a global society of opportunity and hope.

In this session, we will explore the role of business in sustainable futures and especially how business engages, innovates, invests, trains and develops towards a prosperous future.
