Can Humans and Insects Thrive, Share, and Save the Earth?

Yoram Yerushalmi

  • Head of the Israel Center for the Expression of Beneficial Insect
  • Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Biology, Technion, Israel Institute of Technology

In past centuries, insects were considered pests, endangering agricultural and human health. Humans tried to eradicate those pests, using an impressive and ever-evolving arsenal of physical, chemical, and biological tools.

At the dawn of the 20th century, it was clear that, while humans may have won a few battles, we lost the war. A new discipline emerged to harness beneficial insect species to create a circular economy that manages our growing needs in more natural and efficient ways, as well as minimizes our ecological footprint.

In this talk, Yerushalmi will focus on entomophagy, using insects as the main futuristic source of animal protein.

A sample of insect treats will be served.
