Biography

Professor Tal Svoray is a member of the faculty in the Department of Geography and Environmental Development at Ben-Gurion University (BGU) in Beer-sheva, Israel. In his PhD studies, Prof. Svoray worked on the synergy of optical and radar remote sensing for mapping soil-water-vegetation patterns in the semiarid zone of Israel. This work has revealed a high level of spatio-temporal heterogeneity in these patterns at several scales of observation. Since joining the faculty at Ben-Gurion University, Prof. Svoray has focused on the use of spatial modeling to better understand observed vegetation and soil moisture patchiness of geo- and ecosystems. Key components of his work include investigating the processes underlying ecosystem productivity, estimates of shrub-grass ratio (SGR) and the study of desertification processes and land degradation phenomena such as soil loss, water ponding and sediment logging.
