Biography

Arnim Wiek is a Professor in the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University. He also holds Guest Professorships at the University of Freiburg and Leuphana University of Lüneburg in Germany.

Over the past 15 years, Prof. Wiek has worked on a transdisciplinary methodology for transformational solution-oriented sustainability research; a theoretical foundation of sustainability education; and empirical insights into sustainable governance of food systems/economies, water, cities, and nanotechnology.

Prof. Wiek directs the Sustainable Food Economy Lab since 2017. It is an international research group that conducts research on sustainable solutions for the food economy. The group identifies, studies, and provides evidence on existing solutions as well as co-creates, evaluates, and produces actionable knowledge on new solutions to pressing sustainability problems in the food economy. This covers a range of topics, including adoption of sustainable business practices, conversion to sustainable business models, as well as sustainable transformations of food supply chains, entrepreneurial ecosystems, food economy sectors, and entire regional food economies.

Research is conducted in a solution-oriented, multi-level, case-based, and transdisciplinary manner, in collaboration with businesses, policy makers, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and the public. This transformational sustainability research framework has been outlined in Nature Sustainability.

The main recent project is the international partnership grant TRANSFORM - in collaboration with scholars from Canada, USA, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Australia - with a focus on the roles of food SMEs and support organizations in advancing sustainable food system/economy transformations.

Prof. Wiek also conducts research on theory and practice of sustainability science, and advises universities and colleges on how to develop sustainability research and education programs.

He teaches courses on sustainable entrepreneurship and sustainability problem solving. He also leads solution-oriented, project-based learning studios in collaboration with practitioners. He has published articles on key competencies, curriculum design, and project-based learning in sustainability.

He had research and teaching appointments at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, the University of Tokyo, Japan, Leuphana University of Lueneburg, Germany, and Utrecht University, the Netherlands.

He is member of the editorial boards of Sustainability Science (Springer), Sustainable Development (Wiley), and the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education (Emerald).
