Biography

Middleton's research focuses upon understanding children's mathematical thinking; motivation in mathematics; and teacher change. His work in mathematical thinking centers on the development of understanding in rational numbers and geometry in the middle grades. In his work on motivation, he has developed a theory of how individuals make decisions regarding what activities they choose to engage in and how teachers develop motivational constructs that inform their teaching. Much of the work in these two areas has been applied to development of innovative mathematics curricula. Middleton is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Research Committee, has served on math and science education advisory boards, and consulted for the National Academies.
