Biography
Mark Wilhelm is Director of Sustainability and Clean Energy with Tierra, where he leverages over three decades of energy and sustainability industry experience across both sides of the utility meter: half spent in the utility sector and half in sustainable building design, construction, and operations.
Mark is an entrepreneurial thought leader who provides strategic planning, carbon strategy, corporate ESG, and sustainability consulting services to Climate Leader clients. His teams deliver transformational solutions to meet complex sustainability goals.
Mark's electric utility sector experience spans technical, customer service, marketing, and product line leadership positions at APS, EPRI, and Tierra. He led the development of the APS Environmental Showcase Home, managed $20 million of end-use energy technology R&D at EPRI, and expanded energy assessment, GHG emissions verification, and corporate ESG service offerings at Tierra.
Mark served as the first chief sustainability executive for Ameresco. He founded and led two sustainability consultancies, through which he consulted on 70 MSF of high-performance buildings and over 100 sustainable developments. He has developed over 40 MW of renewable energy systems for clients. He directed LEED certification efforts for 80 projects, including eight at ASU, and trained over 6,000 professionals in sustainable design on four contents.
From 2013 to 2015, Mark led the development of ASU’s Climate Neutrality Roadmap, which defined a pathway for ASU to achieve stretch decarbonization goals at a lower net present cost than the Business-As-Usual scenario. This Roadmap helped drive ASU to reach carbon neutrality goals in 2019 – six years earlier than planned.
Mark holds a professional master’s degree in Environmental Planning from ASU and a BA in Economics (cum laude) from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was a contributing author to The Environment Comes Home: Arizona Public Service's Environmental Showcase Home by K. David Pijawka and K. Shetter in 1994. Mark also contributed to the strategy and content of and eight segment public television series about the APS Environmental Showcase Home for KAET-TV PBS station (now Arizona PBS).
