Biography

Rebecca Sanders, PhD, is an assistant research professor in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University, where she is leading research on teleworking at the City of Tempe and on pedestrian safety for the City of Phoenix. She brings nearly 15 years of experience leading research and planning projects to analyze and address pedestrian, bicyclist, and e-scooter safety, design preferences, and mobility. Sanders also has extensive experience with Vision Zero efforts, having played a key role in helping cities such as Seattle, Denver, Portland, Oakland, and Boston to understand and address pedestrian, bicycle, and motorist safety. She is currently working on several Cooperative Research projects to develop e-scooter safety guidance and roadway reallocation guidance, and to investigate bicycle safety at intersections and along segments. She recently co-authored NCHRP guidance to improve pedestrian and bicyclist intersection safety, and led an NCHRP synthesis on pedestrian safety and traffic speed management. Sanders currently serves on TRB’s Bicycle Transportation Committee.
