Biography

George T. Noutsios was born and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece, has a bachelor's degree in chemistry, a master's degree in biochemistry and a doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His dissertation focused on immobilization of antigenic biomolecules in bio-polymeric substrates for detection and diagnosis of endemic Brucella melitensis biotypes. In 2011 he came to the U.S. to pursue his career in respiratory diseases research. During his postdoctoral work at Penn State Hershey Medical Center (2011-2016) he studied the role of cis-acting elements and trans-acting factors on splicing and translation of the pulmonary surfactant protein A, and he identified 14-3-3 isoforms and microRNAs as translational regulatory molecules in lung diseases. He joined University of Arizona in 2016 where he was involved in a collaborate effort to unveil the primary mechanisms of chronic sinusitis in upper airway diseases utilizing in vivo and in vitro air-liquid interface models. Noutsios joined Arizona State University in 2018 as an assistant research professor, where he conducts his own independent research, which is extramurally funded. His focus is to decipher the role of surfactant protein A in upper airway disease and its potential as therapeutic in bacterial sinusitis. At ASU he has multiple roles: teaching microbiology as a guest lecturer, managing Dean Sandrin’s research lab and participating in a multidisciplinary team that is using molecular biology, environmental microbiology, metaproteomics, genomics and microbiome approaches to elucidate fundamental questions in human health and disease. Noutsios maintains active collaborative relationships with academic and clinical institutions across the country (PSU, UA, ASU and Mayo Clinic) in an effort to translate basic scientific findings in a laboratory setting into potential treatments for human disease. In his spare time, George enjoys cycling, working out, traveling, trying new cuisines and craft beer
