On April 15, 2021, ASU Project Cities hosted its third student showcase with the Town of Clarkdale. Students, faculty, and partners convened to learn more about this semester’s student projects, with video presentations from students. The floor was then opened for a Q/A session, presenting students with the opportunity to expand on their recommendations and connect with Clarkdale staff.

• Affordable housing study: Peer community assessment with Deirdre Pfeiffer’s PUP 579: Planning Methods class. 26 graduate students took on a hands-on learning approach to interpret and apply qualitative data to offer Clarkdale useful planning recommendations. Students identified Ketchum, Idaho, and Bisbee, Arizona, as peer communities to Clarkdale. (VIDEO)

 

• Smart towns: Smart parks with Jared Schoepf, Joshua Loughman, and Mark Huerta’s FSE 104/404: EPICS Gold. 5 undergraduate students continued work from the fall 2020 semester, envisioning a smart park. Students researched the feasibility of an integrated public Wi-Fi network and explored various smart park concepts to increase connectivity and improve visitor experience. Students identified Bluetooth speakers to enhance the experience of events and bring more people to the park. (VIDEO)

 

• Smart towns: Smart town infrastructure with Jared Schoepf, Joshua Loughman, and Mark Huerta’s FSE 104/404: EPICS Gold. 5 undergraduate students continued work from the fall 2020 semester, examining the internet infrastructure needs for Clarkdale’s K-12 students. Students assessed Clarkdale’s Historic Clubhouse capacity for internet service to develop Covid safe, functional, distance-learning workstations. Students recommended applying for federal grants to implement streamlined internet infrastructure. (VIDEO)

 

 

We want to recognize all of this semester’s student’s incredible work and resilience, especially their adaptability to the virtual environment. We also extend our gratitude to the Town of Clarkdale for its continued support and engagement. We look forward to continuing this work in the fall 2021 semester!
