As top students studying all facets of sustainability such as food systems, energy, policy, economics and human rights, the Walton Global Scholars in the Global Sustainability Studies Program exemplify the type of future leaders we need for a more sustainable world.
Walton Global Scholars are selected by a committee of faculty and staff to receive scholarships funded by the Rob and Melani Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiatives to help provide access to international opportunities they might not have otherwise. These scholars will complete two different sustainability projects related to coursework based in their host communities as well as share their experiences abroad here on this blog.

Brazil: Human Rights and Sustainability
Halima Belal Alshehi
Halima Belal Alshehi is originally from Dubai, United Arab Emirates and is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability. Alshehi plans to return to the United Arab Emirates and work in the planned sustainable city of Masdar after she graduates.
Chris Barton
Chris Barton, from Littleton, Colo., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track. Barton is a member of Greenlight Solutions, History of Science Society, The Normal School Review and Hard Candy. He is also a Stardust Fellow, a National Merit Winner, and has achieved the Dean’s list every semester at ASU. Barton is interested in researching social construction of the built environment, social and environmental justice and art in cities. In his free time, Barton enjoys writing and playing the saxophone. He has traveled to many major European cities. Barton plans on attending graduate school to study the sociology of sustainability and hopes to find employment in socially oriented urban planning.
Allie Brickner
Allie Brickner, from Chandler, Ariz., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials, and Technology track. Brickner is the President of the Honor Society for Sustainability, a mentor in the Sustainabilibuddies program and a Network Scholar. She is a New American University Scholar, Australian Government Department of Education scholar, Martin T. Farris BGS/Pascal Jacks Scholar, past presenter at AASHE and volunteer and participant at Clinton Global Initiative University. Her research interests lie in business and technology energy use and green business purchasing. Brickner likes to run in marathons, travel, meet new people and explore the outdoors. She has previously traveled to Canada, Mexico, Italy, France, Switzerland, England and Australia. After graduating, Brickner hopes to become an international sustainability consultant for individuals and private businesses.
Molly Cashion
Molly Cashion, from Nashville, Tenn., is a first year graduate student pursuing a Master of Arts in Sustainability. Cashion is involved in Big Brothers Big Sister and in Humane Borders. She is interested in researching how people’s perception of water is influenced by their religion and culture in the southeastern United States. In her free time Cashion enjoys jewelry making, environmental education and community outreach. She has previously traveled to Spain, Italy, Morocco, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Egypt, India, Mexico and Belize. Upon graduation Cashion plans to work for an environmentally focused organization creating and implementing education programs.
Kim Castillo
Kim Castillo, from Las Vegas, Nev., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition Management and a minor in Sustainability. Castillo is a First Year Success Coach and was a member of the Residential Hall Association. She has achieved the Dean’s List both semesters in 2014. Castillo is interested in pursuing the Sustainable Food Systems certificate. In her free time she enjoys cooking, baking, working with animals and going to the movies. Castillo has previously traveled to Mexico. After graduation, she plans to work with grocery stores helping them become more sustainable.
Elizabeth Gray
Elizabeth Gray, from St. Charles, Illi., is a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nonprofit Leadership Management and a Sustainability minor. Gray is a Senator for the College of Public Service and Community Solutions in the ASU Downtown Campus student government, the Chair of Downtown Phoenix Affairs Committee, in the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Student Association, on the Budget Allocations Committee and a member of the Public Service College Council. She is in the Barrett Honors College and is a Provost Scholar. Gray is interested in researching sustainability and nonprofit leadership management. She spends her free time volunteering, watching TED talks, being active in the community and spending time with her family and friends. Gray has previously traveled to France, Canada and Mexico. She plans to enlist in the Peace Corps and become involved in the Clinton Global Initiative University.
Omar Hassan
Omar Ashraf Hassan is originally from Cairo, Egypt and is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Urban Dynamics track. Hassan is a member of the Heliopolis Sporting Club, Gezira Club, Al Ahly Soccer Club and Al Zohoor. He made the Spring 2014 Dean’s List and achieved third place in the national water polo competition in Egypt. Hassan is interested in researching sustainability. In his free time, Hassan likes to go hiking, swimming, boxing, play water polo, read and live a healthy lifestyle. In additional to his international studies here in the United States, he has traveled to Paris and London. Hassan hopes to promote sustainability in Egypt by working with Egyptian farmers on implementing sustainable practices and collaborating with municipalities on introducing new methods of sustainable development.
Evelyne Lelei
Evelyne Jepicemboi Lelei, from Phoenix, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Communication and minoring in Sustainability. Lelei is a member of Trio and the Honors Clubs. She is also the GCC President and had received academic honors. Lelei has traveled to Europe and Africa. She hopes to work with other scholars in the pursuit of helping to create a more sustainable planet.
Cassandra Mac
Cassandra Mac, from Farmington, Mich., is a first year graduate student pursuing a Master’s of Sustainable Solutions. Mac is a member of the Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority. She is a previous recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship in 2012, the Thomas and Mary Krigas Endowed Scholarship and the Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Achievement and Promise in Zoology. Mac is interested in research in international development, environmental justice and sustainability. Mac enjoys travel, reading, scuba diving, hiking, camping, crafting and sports. She has previously traveled to Ecuador. After graduation Mac plans to work toward creating a safe and healthy environment that every person can live in.
Allison Miller
Allison Miller, from Hillsborough, N.J., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Management with a minor in sustainability. Miller volunteers with the Devilish Dash Fundraiser and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa international. She has also been on the Dean’s list during her time at ASU. Miller has traveled Mexico and Aruba. She hopes to find a career that will allow her to work on solutions for sustainability issues.
Sarah Moratto
Sarah Moratto, from Tempe, Ariz., is a first year graduate student pursuing a Master’s of Sustainable Solutions. Moratto was an intern at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and continues to be involved in Disney’s Animal Program. She also works with the Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiatives and the Arizona Science Center. Moratto is a recipient of the John Babb Scholarship and the Gryser Family scholarship. She placed third at the MGE@MSA student research conference poster session and was a Tempe Sister Cities delegate. She is interested in researching wildlife conservation, sustainable tourism and sustainability education and awareness. Moratto enjoys reading, hiking and traveling. She has previously traveled to Germany, Austria, Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala, Italy, Netherlands and Costa Rica. Moratto hopes to work for a conservation-based organization or an organization centered around sustainability education.
Amy Otto
Amy Otto, from Seattle, Wash., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability in the Sustainable Ecosystems track. Otto is a volunteer coordinator with Hands on Greater Phoenix for the Roosevelt Growhouse. Her primary focus right now is working in the community garden at the Roosevelt Growhouse. Otto graduated from Phoenix Community College in the Honors Program. She is interested in cooking, photography and meditation. Otto has not previously traveled outside the United States. Otto plans to continue advocating for local and sustainable food and culture after graduation.
Victoria Sullivan
Victoria Sullivan, from Tucson, Ariz., is a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Business Sustainability. Sullivan is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Page Turners, ASU Outdoors Club and plays intramural soccer. She also achieved the Dean’s List in fall 2013 and spring 2014. Sullivan enjoys running, volunteering and playing soccer. She has previously traveled to New Zealand, Ireland, Guatemala and Mexico. Sullivan plans to work for a company that integrates sustainability throughout their business model. She eventually hopes to become a corporate philanthropist.

Ashley Davieau Briggs
Davi Briggs, from Freeport, Maine, is a first year graduate student pursuing a Master’s of Sustainable Solutions. Briggs is a member of the Student and Cultural Engagement Club, El Cancilio and SUNDABT. She is also a USAID Fellow and is in the Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society and the Delta Alpha Pi Honor Society. She was listed in Who’s Who Among Students. Briggs is interested in researching sustainability and international development. Particularly she is interested in the role that resources, such as water, play in international conflicts. Briggs enjoys reading, dancing and traveling. She has previously lived in India, Spain, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Korea. Upon graduation Briggs plans to work for an international organization such as UNDP or USAID focusing on sustainable development strategies and community engagement.
Aisling Force
Aisling Force, from Cave Creek, Ariz., is a second year graduate student pursuing a Master’s in Sustainable Solutions. Force graduated Magna Cum Laude from University of Arizona in 2005. Her research interests include international community development, sustainable tourism and behavioral and social change. Force enjoys whitewater rafting, mountain biking, hiking, camping, drawing and painting. She has traveled to Thailand, India, Nepal, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and Argentina. After graduation she plans to work in tourism helping companies to become a driving force for sustainability change.
Christopher Frettoloso
Christopher Frettoloso, from Scottsdale, Ariz., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track. Frettoloso is a member of The Center for Alternative Building Studies and is a LEED Green Associate. He is interested researching sustainable development and alternative building materials. Frettoloso enjoys cooking during his free time. He has previously traveled to Ireland, Jamaica and Mexico. After graduation Frettoloso plans to work with sustainable development and redevelopment projects.
Jessica Hoffman
Jessica Hoffmann, from Tucson, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Economics of Sustainability track. Hoffmann is a member of the Arizona Outdoors Club and the Honor Society of Sustainability. She is also an Arizona High Regents Scholar and has achieved the Dean’s List the past three semesters. Hoffman is interested in researching sustainability challenges around potable water, food resources and how different societies and cultures adapt to various sustainability challenges. She is interested in hiking, camping, skiing, gardening and walking in nature. She also volunteers at Rio Salado Audubon Center working with elementary school youth. Hoffman has traveled to Canada, Mexico, France and Costa Rica. After graduation she plans to go into education and help children identify with nature and learn life-long sustainability habits.
Michaela Jones
Michaela Jones, from Albuquerque, N.M., is a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track. Jones is a SAT instructor with the Princeton Review and is involved with LibertyLink and Partners in Empowerment. She is also a recipient of the National Merit Scholarship and has achieved the Dean’s List the past three semesters. Jones has researched tree cover in Goodyear, Ariz., and is currently researching flood mitigation practices. In her free time she enjoys nail art, camping, mixed martial arts and traveling to Latin America. Jones has previously traveled to Guadalajara, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. Upon graduation, she hopes to find a career in water law, hydrology and sustainable agriculture.
Siddhanth Paralkar
Siddhanth Paralkar is originally from Mumbai, Maharashtra, India and is a first year graduate student pursuing a Master’s of Sustainable Solutions. Paralkar is a member of Changemaker Central and Buddhists for Peace. He is interested in researching community development, education and the cultural and spiritual perspective of sustainability. Paralkar enjoys hiking, watching movies, singing and playing soccer and cricket. Outside of India and the United States, this will be Paralkar’s first international experience. He plans to work as a consultant for nonprofit and corporate organizations after graduation.
Sambhram Patel
Sambhram Patel is originally from Bangalore, India and is a first year graduate student pursuing a Master’s of Sustainable Solutions. Patel is a member of the ASU Outdoors Club and is involved with projects in the Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiatives. He is interested in researching circular economies and sustainable supply chains through the application of the LCA framework. Patel spends his free time trail running and climbing, and learning more about happiness development indexes and permaculture. Outside of his international study in the United States, Patel has also traveled to Nepal. Upon graduation, he plans to find work in the supply chain management sector trying to increase sustainability by implementing the LCA framework. He also hopes to look for ways to incorporate a positive social impact framework into circular economy theories.
Paul Prosser
Paul J. Prosser, from Gilbert, Ariz., and Ipswich, Mass., is a second year graduate student pursuing a Masters of Sustainable Solutions. Prosser is involved in graduate student mentoring and the U.S. Green Building Council. He is interested in researching how to use indigenous knowledge to create sustainable solutions that fit local ecosystems. Prosser enjoys biking, photography and food. He has previously traveled to Canada, Mexico, South Africa and the United Kingdom. After graduation he plans to teach and consult about sustainability practices.
Aislyn Richmond
Aislyn Richmond is a native of Victoria, British Columbia and a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability in the Society and Sustainability track. Richmond’s academic interests include sustainability education, food systems, urban planning and dynamics, mindfulness and happiness, and sustainable community development. In her free time Richmond enjoys art, poetry and music and particularly enjoys the local art community in Phoenix. She has traveled to Haiti, Nicaragua, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic. Richmond plans to become a school teacher and engage her students in the subject of sustainability. She plans to continue her involvement in community development and in community revitalization projects within the Phoenix metro area.
Christopher Robinson
Christopher Robinson, from Phoenix, Ariz., is a second year graduate student pursuing a Master’s of Sustainable Solutions. Robinson is a School of Sustainability Graduate Representative and is an ASU Chinese Language Flagship alum. He is interested in researching multi-functional landscapes, transition management and international development. Robinson spends his time studying international cultures and languages, social entrepreneurship, future technology and society. He spent one year studying and working in China. Robinson plans to pursue a Sustainability PhD and find employment with an international development organization.
Hong Kong: Cities, Sustainability and Public Policy
Gabrielle Blanchette
Gabrielle Blanchette, from Phoenix, Ariz., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Conservation Biology and Ecology and minoring in Sustainability. Blanchette is a member of the Central Arizona Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology, is an ASU Tempe Bee Lab volunteer and an Audubon volunteer. She is interested in researching heavy metal effects on honey bees, sustainable systems, community-based conservation and conservation education. Blanchette enjoys working with animals, gardening, geocaching, antiquing, traveling, visiting museums and photography. This program will be her first time outside the United States. Blanchette plans to continue her studies at ASU to pursue a master’s degree in the International Peace Corps and a Master’s of Sustainable Solutions. After her studies she plans to incorporate sustainability and conservation into a cohesive model working toward a regenerative society.
Vanessa Davis
Vanessa Davis, from Mesa, Ariz., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Sustainability and Sociology. Davis is an executive assistant in the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability at ASU. She is also a mentor and involved in the Obama Scholars Program. Davis has an Associate in Applied Science in Justice Studies and a Certificate in Crime Scene Technology from Scottsdale Community College. She also interned with the Phoenix Criminal Investigation Division in the Environmental Protection Agency. Davis is interested in researching the intersection of sustainability and sociology to find the most effective way to encourage behavior change toward sustainable actions. She enjoys boxing, kickboxing, hiking, writing, reading, crafting, practicing yoga and spending time with her husband and two sons. Davis has previously traveled to Germany and the Netherlands. She plans to continue her career with the Institute and hopes to become involved in project management and possibly teaching after graduation.
Elija Flores
Elija Flores, from Phoenix, Ariz., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Global Health and minoring in Sustainability. Flores is involved in ASU Changemaker, Devils in Disguise, and VegAware@ASU. She is also a recipient of the Len and Rena Gordon “Spunky” Scholarship. Flores research includes climate change and the BRACE program at ASU. During her free time, Flores practices yoga, hula hooping and exploring cities and nature. Flores has previously studied abroad in France and Switzerland. She plans to continue her studies at ASU pursuing a master’s degree in the International Peace Corps.
Lisset Gonzalez
Lisset Gonzalez, from Anaheim, Calif., is a first year graduate student pursuing a Master of Public Administration in Urban Management. Gonzalez is a Research Assistant for the Center of Science, Technology and Environmental Policy Studies. Her research interests include environmental policy, community development and urban sustainability. In her free time, Gonzalez enjoys traveling, nutrition, painting and hiking. Gonzalez has previously traveled to France, Spain and the Netherlands. After graduation she hopes to advance sustainable solutions as a public manager at the local level.
Joshua Haddad
Joshua Haddad, from Anaheim, Cali., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Entrepreneurship and minoring in Sustainability. Haddad is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and achieved the Dean’s List in 2014. He is interested in researching sustainability for current structures particularly focusing on restaurants and office building. Haddad enjoys being involved in the community, sports and music. He has previously traveled to Italy, Jordan and Canada. Haddad plans to go into business helping restaurants become more sustainable.
Alexandra Novak
Alexandra Novak, from Bolingbrook, Illi., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability in the Sustainable Urban Dynamics track and a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning. Novak is a School of Sustainability Sustainabilibuddy, has achieved the Dean’s List every semester since 2011 and is a recipient of the ASU President’s Scholarship. She is interested in researching urban food systems, sustainable landscape design and transit and pedestrian-oriented transportation development. In her free time Novak enjoys music, hiking, gardening, traveling and photography. She has previously traveled to Luneburg, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic. Novak plans to pursue a career in landscape design and urban planning working to incorporate nature into urban environments making cities more livable.
Jeffrey Ong
Jeffrey Ong, from Phoenix, Ariz., is a second year graduate pursuing a Masters of Public Administration. Ong is a member of the Asian Corporate and Entrepreneurship Leaders. He is an ASU Spirit of Service Scholar, a Rocky Mountain Emmy Award, a Mentee of the Year and a member of ACEL Phoenix. Ong is interested in researching sustainability in urban centers and K-12 Education Policy. He has previously traveled to China, Japan, Thailand, Italy, Switzerland and France. Ong plans to become a sustainability policy advisor in local government and promote leadership in sustainability efforts.
R. Helios F. Osmanoglu
Helios F. Osmanoglu is originally from Istanbul, Turkey and is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Entrepreneurship and minoring in Sustainability. He is a member of Phi Gamma Delta and has achieved the Dean’s List at ASU. Osmanoglu attended a seminar “A Sustainable World Project” and plans to continue researching sustainability. He enjoys fitness, photography and traveling. Osmanoglu has travel to many countries in Europe. He plans to continue exploring sustainability issues in developing countries.
Tara Pryts
Tara M Pryts, from Rogue River, Oreg., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability in the Sustainable Urban Dynamics track. Pryts graduated as an honor student from Scottsdale Community College and has been on the Dean’s List at ASU. She is interested in researching sustainable urban planning and design. Pryts personal time is spent learning more about urban farming, music, literature and interior design. This program will be her first time out of the United States. Upon graduating, Pryts plans to incorporate her interest in interior design into sustainable urban planning practices.
Haley Randell
Haley Randell, from Stonington, Conn., is a second year graduate student pursuing a Master’s of Sustainable Solutions. Randell has served as the Secretary in the Zero Waste Club and as a volunteer for the Living Building Challenge and is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council student club. She already published articles in Lemur News and Oryx. Her research interests include creative sustainable cities, green building, waste management and circular economies. Randell enjoys hiking, sports, dogs and meeting new people. She has previously travelled to Madagascar, South Africa, Mexico and Europe. Upon graduation Randell plans to move to Honolulu to pursue a career working for city government to create a more livable and sustainable city.
Taylor Reimann
Taylor Reimann, from Mesa, Ariz., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability in the Policy and Governance in Sustainability track. Reimann is the Vice President of Phi Alpha Delta and the Treasurer of Woman as Hero. Reimann also has an Associate of Arts from Mesa Community College and is currently involved in pre-law studies. In her free time, she enjoys camping, ATV riding, horseback riding and volunteering. This will be her first time outside of the United States. Reimann plans to attend Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law to study environmental law.
Evan Siegel
Evan Siegel, from Tuscon, Ariz., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track. Siegel is also a member of the Honor Society for Sustainability. He is an Eagle Scout and also made the Dean’s List in spring and fall semesters 2014. Siegel is interested in researching sustainability and energy technologies. He is interested in skiing and enjoying nature. He has previously traveled to Canada and Mexico. Siegel plans to pursue a job in sustainable energy production
Zoe Stein
Zoe Stein, from Purchase, N.Y., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability in the Society and Sustainability track. Stein is a member of the Honor Society for Sustainability, Vegaware@ASU and ASU cycling. She is also a former School of Sustainability Ambassador. Stein is interested in researching sustainable community development, policy and female reproductive health and education. Stein enjoys cycling, animal advocacy and researching the local food economy in her free time. She has spent a semester living in Denmark and has visited several countries throughout Europe. She has also spent time volunteering in Cambodia and Costa Rica. Stein plans to pursue a career in community development relating to sexual health education.
Heather Catherine Turrentine
Heather Catherine Turrentine, from Chino Hills, Cali., is a first year PhD student in Sustainability. Turrentine is a research assistant and a member of The Sustainability Consortium. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Policy. Turrentine’s research includes biodiversity conservation, human perception and decision-making, commons governance and understanding the trade-offs involved in creating sustainable systems. She enjoys rock climbing, animals and plants in nature. Turrentine has previously traveled to Costa Rica and Canada.
Paulina Vu
Paulina Thao-An Vu, from Peoria, Ariz., is a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track. Vu is the treasurer for the Sun Devils for Wildlife Conservation. She is also in the Mu Epsilon Theta Catholic Sorority and the 2014 School of Sustainability Academic Bowl team member. Vu is a Presidential Scholar and an International Baccalaureate Graduate. She is interested in the social aspect of sustainability and how social capital can be used to achieve sustainability. In her spare time Vu enjoys photography, hiking, vocal performance and traveling. She has previously traveled to Canada and Vietnam. Vu hopes to attend graduate school and plans to join the Peace Corps.

Haley Downing
Haley Downing, from Phoenix, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability. Downing is a President Scholar and a member of the Barrett Honors College. She is interested in researching how sustainability can influence the economic sector. In her free time Downing enjoys calculus, live music, hand percussion and Raks Sharqi. This will be her first time traveling outside the United States. Downing is still exploring what she wants to do after graduation and is excited to gain new ideas and insights from this program.
Trinity England
Trinity England, from Payson, Ariz., is a senior studying sustainability with an ecosystems track. She is also pursuing a minor in anthropology. England is a member of the National Honor Society for Sustainability and the Campus Sustainability Student Initiatives. Personally, she enjoys traveling, live music, yoga, camping, cooking and urban farming. She has traveled to Germany, Holland, Mexico and Canada. Fascinated by cultures, she is excited to observe and interact with a foreign environment this summer as she travels to Nepal to study sustainability. She plans to research how climate change impacts community-based management practices. Her other research interests include wildlife conservation, sustainable urban development and sustainability curriculum at the K-12 level. Upon graduation England plans to pursue a master’s degree in urban planning.
Jayme Foland
Jayme Foland, from Mesa, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability in the Urban Dynamics track. Foland is a recipient of the Regent High Honors Endorsement. Her academic interests center around justice, inequality, art and foreign language. In her free time she enjoys painting, reading and playing with her dogs. Foland has traveled to Austria and Germany. Foland plans to remain in the Phoenix metropolitan after graduation working to expand mass transportation and in low-income communities improving access to adequate education and health care.
Thomas Hawthorne
Thomas Hawthorne, from Goodyear, Ariz., is a junior pursuing Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication with a minor in Sustainability. Hawthorne is a member of the ASU Outdoors Club, an Arizona High Regents Scholar, and has received the Edward Beaty Photojournalism Award. He is interested in creating documentaries about sustainability challenges. Hawthorne spends his free time enjoying photography, creating documentaries, traveling, writing and hiking. He has previously traveled to Mexico. Upon graduation Hawthorne plans to increase global awareness to bring solutions to sustainability issues through connectivity and broader understanding of current issues.
Nicholas Kiedrowski
Nicholas Kiedrowski, from Tempe, Ariz., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning with a minor in Sustainability. Kiedrowski is a member of the Mesa Community College Community Band and achieved the Dean’s List in spring and fall 2014. He is interested in researching urbanization in developing countries, retrofitting sprawl, non-automobile transit and renewable energy. He has previously traveled to Australia, South Africa, Thailand, Peru, England and the Netherlands. Kiedrowski plans on attending graduate school to continue studying sustainability and urban planning.
Phillip Moore
Phillip Moore, from Hudson, Ohio, is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability and a Bachelor of Science in Earth and Environmental Studies. Moore is an Eagle Scout and is interested in researching sustainable agriculture. He enjoys music, athletics, hiking, photography and film. Moore has previously traveled to Mexico. After graduation he plans to help farmers all over the world sustainably harvest and distribute organic produce.
Patricia Susanto
Patricia Alessandra Susanto, from Scottsdale, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Conservation Biology and Ecology and minoring in Sustainability. Susanto is a member of the Arizona Outdoors Club and Women in STEM. She is also an Arizona Regents Honors Scholar and has achieved the Dean’s List the past six semesters. Susanto had conducted research through the SOLUR Program in the Wetland Ecosystem Ecology Lab. She spends her free time hiking, reading, traveling, snowboarding, camping, photography and watching live music. Susanto has previously traveled to the Philippines, Indonesia, England, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Ireland and Switzerland. After graduate school she plans to join the Peace Corps and eventually work for an NGO promoting sustainability.
Brynn Szukala
Brynn Marie Szukala, from Phoenix, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology. Szukala is a Study Abroad Ambassador and is in the ASU Outdoors Club, ASU Roller Derby, Girl Scouts of the USA and ASU Habitat for Humanity. She achieved the Girl Scouts’ Silver and Bronze Award and the Dean’s List at ASU in 2013 and 2014. Szukala is interested in the socio-environmental interactions between humans and the earth. She is particularly interested in anthropology and the process of evolution of humanity in relation to our environment. She has already conducted research on corporate sustainability, food systems and wildlife conservation. Szukala enjoys horseback riding, art, crafts, gardening, boxing, animal welfare and much more. She previously traveled to the United Kingdom and spent 7 months living in Ireland where she traveled to Poland, Scotland, Greece, France, Italy and Spain. Szukala plans to pursue a graduate degree in sustainability and eventually work for a nonprofit organization. She hopes to get involved in corporate sustainability initiatives and revolutionizing the social aspects of today that are impeding sustainability solutions.
Jesse Walberer
Jesse Walberer, from Peoria, Arizona, is a junior seeking a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track. Walberer is involved in the campus organization Cru and is also a member of the Honor Society for Sustainability. He has been recognized on the School of Sustainability Dean’s List four times and is a recipient of the Arizona Regent High Honors Award. Academically, he is interested in the effects of urbanization and population growth on water supplies and food systems. He enjoys hiking with friends, biking around Tempe, reading and camping. He has yet to leave North America but looks forward to his study abroad trip to Nepal this summer. Upon graduation Walberer hopes to pursue a master’s in watershed management in order to solve water-related sustainability issues in the Valley and abroad.
Aleksandra Wrobel
Aleksandra Wrobel, from Mesa, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Business with a concentration in sustainability. Wrobel is a member of the Global Business Association and the Arizona Outdoors Clubs. She is interested in researching food systems sustainability and international business. Wrobel likes to go hiking, camping, cooking and anything related to coffee. She has previously traveled to New Zealand and Switzerland. Wrobel plans on doing her honors thesis on the topic of sustainable food systems in Nepal and how they differ from the food systems in the U.S. After the program she hopes to continue studying sustainable food systems.

Callie Rose Alden
Callie Rose Alden, from Mesa, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability in the Society and Sustainability track. Alden is a member of the Local to Global Justice club. She is interested in researching food, agriculture and the psychology behind decision-making. Alden is passionate about animal rights, reading and gardening. She has traveled to Mexico. After graduation Alden would like to work with the agricultural industry and promote sustainability education.
Hailey Baker
Hailey Baker, from Philadelphia, Penn., is a freshman pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability. Baker is a member of the Barrett Sustainability Club, the Honor Society for Sustainability and the ASU Eating Disorder Awareness Club. She is a National Merit Finalist, a Dean’s List Recipient and a Barrett Scholar. Baker is interested in researching climate change, genetically modified organisms and environmental policy. She spends her time reading and writing, waterskiing, hiking, camping and playing soccer. This will be Baker’s first time outside the United States. She hopes to become a climate change analyst and conduct climate change research after graduation.
Kylie Brown
Kylie Brown, from Denver, Colo., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability and a Bachelor of Arts in Design Management. Brown is a Student Orientation Leader and a member of the U.S. Green Building Council student group. She is interested in researching design, architecture, green buildings and sustainability challenges for developing countries. Brown loves reading, football and music and has previously visited Mexico and England. In the future, she would like to work in the green building field and help people understand the challenges we are facing in our global community.
Ernest Chakwera
Ernest Chakwera is originally from Lilongwe, Malawi and a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track. Chakwera is a member of Africa Rises, the chess club and the Honors Society for Sustainability. He is a recipient of the MasterCard Foundation Scholar, a C.G.I.U. attendee and a NCUIRE research assistant. Chakwera is interested in researching women studies, human rights, clean energy, recycling, economics and sustainability. During his free time he reads and makes and listens to music. Chakwera’s study at ASU is an international experience and he has been able to explore Arizona and Georgia. He has also traveled to South Africa. After graduation he hopes to return to Malawi and work with the energy sector.
Breeonna Combs
Breeonna Combs, from Goodyear, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability. Combs is the recipient of the First Year Academic Merit Award, is a New American University Scholar and has been awarded on the Dean’s List. She is interested in researching ecology and human rights. Combs loves watching wildlife documentaries, going to concerts and spending time with her puppy. She has not previously traveled abroad. Combs is planning on working with a nonprofit organization in conservation biology.
John Dickkut
John Dickkut, from Ahwatukee, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering Management. Dickkut has achieved the Dean’s List multiple semesters. He is interested in researching sustainable energy, sustainable technology, international development, life cycle assessment and LEED certification. Dickkut spends his free time playing guitar and soccer, fishing, snowboarding, skateboarding and camping. He has previously traveled to Mexico. Dickkut hopes to pursue a career in LEED certification and sustainability energy and development.
Aaron Gardner
Aaron Gardner, from Dublin, Cali., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track. Gardner made the ASU Dean’s List in 2012 and 2013. He is interested in researching solar power, marketing, technology and intergenerational equity. Gardner enjoys baseball, basketball, football, biking, and his family and friends. He has previously traveled to Mexico and Canada. Gardner hopes to find a career in a corporation as a manager of their sustainability program and initiatives.
James Gomez
James Gomez, from Upland, Cali., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track. Gomez is a member of the Arizona State Rugby Football Club and a New American Scholarship. He is interested in researching renewable energy, energy policy and energy systems engineering. Gomez spends his free time getting involved in athletics including basketball, baseball and rugby. His previous international travels include Canada and Mexico. In the future Gomez hopes to design and manage renewable energy technologies. Eventually he plans to develop new energy policies for the United States working toward smarter energy development laws.
Arnaud Irakoze
Arnaud Irakoze, from Bujumbura, Burundi, is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track. Irakoze is a member of the Honor Society for Sustainability and has achieved the Dean’s List at ASU. He’s interested in researching renewable energy and solar energy. In his free time, Irakoze enjoys traveling, athletics and real estate ventures. He hopes to find a position as an environmental program manager for a city in the state of Arizona after graduation.
Liliana Tapia Jimenez
Liliana Tapia Jimenez, from Yuma, Ariz., is a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Sustainable Energy, Materials and Technology track. Jimenez is also a recipient of the Provost’s New American University Scholar award and has made the Dean’s List while at ASU. She is interested in researching renewable energy, sustainable development and international cooperation. Jimenez spends her free time writing, reading and traveling. She has previously traveled to Mexico. Jimenez hopes to work with international organizations focusing on implementing sustainability strategies into urban development and energy supply.
Suzanne Jumper
Suzanne Jumper, from Charleston, S.C., is a first year graduate student pursuing a Master’s of Sustainable Solutions. Jumper is interested in water security issues dealing with water scarcity and resource management. She plans to continue to study and gain competency in the both the business and industry sides of water management and policy. She enjoys being active, particularly running, hiking and practicing yoga. Jumper lived in Korea for one year and in Germany for two years during which she traveled extensively. Her favorite places that she’s visited are Thailand, Greece and Croatia. Jumper plans to become a sustainability manager in the business sector or work for a municipality crafting water policies.
Ashley Ann Knudsen
Ashley Knudsen, from Chandler, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability. Knudsen is the Secretary for the Campus Student Sustainability Initiatives. She also received the Transfer Achievement Award at ASU. Her research interests include international development, sustainable energy, technology, materials and urban planning. Knudsen enjoys learning languages, photography and biomimicry. She has previously traveled to the Czech Republic, England, France, Poland and Austria. Knudsen hopes to research and innovate cities across the globe and obtain a master’s degree overseas.
Zachary Koehler
Zachary Koehler, from Prescott, Ariz., is a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design with a minor in Sustainability. Koehler is a member of Industrial Design Students of America, Sigma Alpha Pi National Society of Leadership and Success and is an undergraduate representative for Exposed Symposium student group. He has achieved the Dean’s List at ASU, was recognized as athlete of the year in 2013 and was a D.A.R.E. role model scholarship recipient in 2013. He spends his free time mountain biking, snowboarding, hunting and fishing. After graduation, Koehler plans to pursue a career in industrial design where he hopes to integrate sustainability practices into his workplace.
Rebecca McCarthy
Rebecca McCarthy, from Fountain Valley, Cali., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Ecosystems. McCarthy is the event coordinator for the Global Sustainability Network and a member of the Campus Student Sustainability Initiatives. She is a New American University Scholar and in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is also an ASU Recycling Program worker. McCarthy’s conducted research with the Tres Rios Wetland and is interested in researching ecosystem ecology and environmental law. In her free time, she enjoys ballroom, Latin, contemporary and ballet dance. She also enjoys scuba diving and exploring wetland and coral reef ecology. McCarthy has previously visited Costa Rica, Mexico and the British Virgin Islands. She plans to continue her education pursuing an environmental law degree specializing in water rights and conservation.
Austin Olaiz
Austin Olaiz, from Yuma, Ariz., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Olaiz is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and is a Fulton Undergraduate Teaching Assistant. He is the recipient of the Provost Award, is the New American University Scholar and he is also an Arizona College Scholarship Foundation Scholar. Olaiz is pursuing research in sustainable civil engineering, sustainable construction materials and sustainable energy solutions. He is interested in engineering education and coaching youth athletics. Olaiz has traveled to Mexico. He hopes to integrate sustainability into his career as a civil engineer.
Adam O’Neil
Adam O’Neil, from Phoenix, Ariz., is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Supply Chain Management and a minor in Sustainability. O’Neil is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, the Supply Chain Management Association and is a High Honors Tuition Scholar. He is interested in researching the relationship between supply chain management, sustainability, politics, science and technology. O’Neil spends his free time scuba diving, snowboarding, hiking, participating in Spartan Races and spending time with his family. After graduation he plans to become a supply chain manager and incorporate socially responsible practices into his company.
Dan Reck
Dan Reck, from Rancho Santa Margarita, Cali., is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Finance and minoring in Sustainability. Reck is also a recipient of the Dean’s Award Scholarship. He is interested in reaching landscape and building design, business structure and management. Reck plays golf and studies design and history in his free time. He has previously traveled to Mexico. Reck plans to continue to study the relationship between sustainability, government and business throughout his career.

Zafaranlou is in the Honors Society for Sustainability and received the Transfer Achievement Award. She is interested in researching sustainability, international development, political science and human rights. Zafaranlou spends her free time drawing, painting, volunteering and enjoying music. She has previously traveled to Columbia. Zafaranlou hopes to pursue a career where she can inspire economic growth while minimizing environmental degradation in developing countries.
