Peoria leadership kicks off fourth year of student projects with Project Cities

On September 14, 2022, ASU Project Cities hosted its first in-person kick-off event since the start of COVID. Over 50 undergraduate and graduate students from 5 Peoria projects joined their project leads and Peoria executive leadership to learn more about the community they are working with this semester and plan for the coming semester. 

The event kicked off with opening remarks from the Deputy City Manager, Erik Strunk, who highlighted the City’s work in sustainability. Students were also joined by City Manager Jeff Tyne, who highlighted the City’s Livability Initiatives, which are the long-term priorities for the city to provide its award-winning quality of life to its residents.

Fall 2022 Projects

    • Microtransit Feasibility Assessment: 53 graduate and undergraduate students from Dr. Mikhail Chester’s CEE 474/574 Transportation Systems Planning course will work with Peoria’s Transit Division to research microtransit models in other urban areas and identify opportunities for implementing microtransit in Peoria’s existing transportation systems. 

    • Fleet Electrification Strategies: 15 undergraduates from Nathan Parker’s SOS 324 Sustainable Energy and Technology Systems course will review strategies for fleet electrification in the City of Peoria. 

    • Green Waste Scaling: One graduate student from The Polytechnic School Environmental and Resource Management program will work with Al Brown to conduct a life cycle assessment and cost-benefit analysis to implement a green waste program in Peoria. 

    • Extreme Heat Communication: 19 graduate and undergraduate students from Dr. Kathryn Lambrecht’s TWC 401/501 Fundamentals of Technical Communication course will collaborate with Peoria’s Office of Emergency Management to design messaging about extreme heat for the City of Peoria.

    • Senior Resource Guide: Graduate students from Dr. Aaron Guest’s HCA 509 Aging in Place course will develop a resource guide for seniors in Peoria.
