Geographer Patricia Gober, the founding co-director of the Decision Center for Desert City, launches this year’s Water/Climate Briefings with a conversation about her newly released book, Building Resilience for Uncertain Water Futures. Gober will describe the existential threats facing global water systems: population growth and economic development, unsustainable use, environmental change, and weak and fragmented governance. Because today’s water systems are increasingly complex and face greater uncertainty in the future, a “business-as-usual” approach to water science and management are not enough. Instead, a more holistic, strategic, agile, and publicly engaged process of water decision making is needed.
Gober’s research centers on climate adaptation, water-resources management, and the use of science and visualization for real-world decision-making. Gober, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, was awarded the Prince Sultan Abdulaziz International Price for Water in 2008.
