Sustaining Indus Valley Cultures
Vijay Paranjpye
- Professor Emeritus, Development Economics and Environmental Science, University of Pune, India
- Chairman, Gomukh Environmental Trust for Sustainable Development
Vijay Paranjpye's career has focused on social, economic and ecological impacts of development, water-resource planning. A keen mountaineer, he is deeply involved in advocacy and public interest litigation for nature conservation.
The Indus River Valley supplies water for one-third of the population living in Tibet (China), Pakistan, parts of Afghanistan, and northwestern parts of India. Over 75% of the water yield comes from the high-altitude Himalayan region, but geopolitical and mainstream economic discourse disregard the region's importance to food security. In this talk, Paranjpye will discuss how local communities evolve short-term and long-term coping mechanisms to counter food shortage and will suggest a way forward.
A light lunch will be served.
