Cuba GIE: ASU Students

Is it inevitable the economic-driver of tourism must cause environmental, societal (and economic) harm?

Seventeen ASU students participated in Cuba: Unlocked and on the Edge of Rapid Transitions. The island nation of 11 million is struggling to provide food, energy, waste management, etc., for its own people, and yet recently signed a contract for five cruise-ship lines to bring 18 million tourists to Cuba in 2018…18 million tourists requiring food, energy, waste management, etc. This spring course explored how Cuba can economically benefit from tourism, without depriving its own people of much-needed resources.
