To manage the increasing risks of water shortages, the seven Colorado River Basins states that share the allocation of the river, worked with local water agencies, Tribes, non-governmental organizations, Mexico, and the Department of Interior to negotiate the historic Colorado River Drought Contingency Plans (DCP). These plans provide important new direction and guidelines for the next decade. Despite this significant accomplishment, difficult questions remain about the long-term sustainability of Colorado River basin.

As the natural flows on the river are altered by drought and the impacts of climate variability and change, there remains significant uncertainty about water availability in the coming decades. Meanwhile the river remains over-allocated. What will be the impact on cities, agriculture, tribes, and the environment? How will we adapt our water management in the West to maintain long-term sustainable regions?
