Food Policy at a Crossroads: How the Swette Center will Lead
Kathleen Merrigan
- Director, Swette Center for Sustainable Food Systems
The bruising farm bill debate has highlighted many unresolved food policy issues. Rising diabesity, SNAP access, trade wars, water shortages, climate change risks, the consequences of increased global demand for protein…the list of food policy issues is long and growing. How will the new ASU Swette Center for Sustainable Food Systems engage and help catalyze the changes we need to sustain the planet?
Join us as the inaugural executive director of the Swette Center discusses the opportunities for ASU to help steer this local-to-national conversation. Merrigan will welcome any food and agriculture questions important to you and your community.
Dr. Kathleen Merrigan, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, is best known for writing and implementing the law establishing U.S. organic food standards, and for opening USDA’s doors wider to local food entrepreneurs, small farmers, and disadvantaged communities. Before joining ASU, she was a professor and executive director of sustainability at George Washington University. In 2010, Time magazine named her among the “100 most influential people in the world.”
A light reception will be provided.
