Global Futures Special Seminar Series
Nicholas Bates
- Senior Scientist and Director of Research, Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences
Amy Maas
- Associate Scientist, Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences
Join us for a series of special seminars offered by scientists from the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, a marine-research and educational nonprofit.
Tuesday, January 18, 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
Virtual and in-person at ISTB-7, 777 E University, Rm 360
Oceans of Change: The Twin Problems of Carbon Dioxide and Acidification
Nicholas Bates is a chemical oceanographer whose multidisciplinary research draws upon a “systems” understanding of marine biogeochemistry and ocean change. His talk will focus on the role and response of the oceans to climate and environmental change—drawing upon research from ocean time-series observations, the North Atlantic Ocean, corals reefs, and polar regions.
Wednesday, January 19, 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
Virtual event only
Improving Estimates of Zooplankton Contributions to Biogeochemical Cycling
Amy Maas is a comparative physiologist and biological oceanographer whose research addresses environment influences on the distribution and biology of marine invertebrates. Her talk will explain how image-based distributional datasets and physiological experiments improve understanding of zooplankton's role in midwater ecosystems and movement of carbon through the ocean system.
