How the Humanities Can Save the Planet: Living Sustainably
Sir Jonathan Bate
- Professor and Provost of Worcester College, Oxford University
Sir Jonathan Bate is an acclaimed biographer, broadcaster, critic, and Shakespearean scholar from Oxford University.
In addressing our current climate crisis, we need not only scientists to propose technological fixes, but artists and humanities scholars to offer images of a more sustainable way of life. In his talk, Bate will explore a range of exemplars from the humanities -- from ancient Chinese poet Wang Wei to abstract expressionist artist Agnes Martin in the American West -- that suggest ways we can live more sustainably.
Please join us for a dessert reception following the talk.
This is the third talk of the “How the Humanities Can Save the Planet” lecture series, which focuses on how humanities thought can help generate imaginative solutions to environmental concerns.
While we encourage you to bike or ride Light Rail, 2-hour parking validations for the Fulton Center Parking Garage will be available to community members.
This event is hosted in partnership with the Department of English and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
