Matthias Barth

To achieve sustainability a fundamental shift in mindsets and actions is called for on behalf of individuals and on societal levels. Learning and education are seen as key in this major undertaking. Consequently, we see initiatives and actions in education for sustainable development on all levels of education from kindergarten to higher education.

However, in his talk, Matthias Barth will argue that we have yet to leverage the full potential that educational science has to offer to our shared endeavor of sustainability science. Matthias will discuss three areas of sustainability research to throw into relief the unique contribution that educational science can make to individual action and behavior change, to organizational change and social learning, and, finally, to inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration. <

Matthias is a Professor of Education for Sustainable Development at Leuphana University. He is author of "Implementing sustainability in higher education. Learning in an age of transformation". Together with ASU’s Arnim Wiek he is currently running the research project “Educating future change agents,” which is investigating competence development in different learning settings both at ASU and Leuphana University in Luneburg, Germany.
