The Anthropocene is the label for the brief geological period in which the human species has transformed – and is transforming – the surface of the Earth, land, sea, and sky. How we cope with the accumulating effects of our actions is a major issue for society and requires, above all, understanding and political leadership, global as well as national. The penalty for failure could be disasterous.
