Learn how to engage your students in the world around them and integrate learning through experiencing the science and ecology of the Sonoran Desert. We are conducting a three-day workshop for upper elementary teachers with tools and resources for supporting STEM thinking and BIG IDEAS through learning, analyzing and thinking about the environment right around us.

Topics include:

• Phoenix Metro Geology and Watershed
• Sun Energy and Transfer
• Desert Dynamics
• Our City’s Urban Ecology

Facilitated by: Lisa Herrmann, Central Arizona–Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research Program (funded by the National Science Foundation), Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability

With: Lacey Wieser of Wieser Learning; Pam Justice of Arizona Project WET; Jon Ismail of Arizona Center for Nature Conservation; Dr. John Weser of Scottsdale Community College; and ASU scientists Kate Weiss and Alicia Hinter

Stipend: Up to $850

• $350 for completion of workshop
• + 6 hours of online learning
• $150 for creation of a complementary learning resource
• Up to $350 for transfer of learning to colleagues on your campus through mentoring, incorporation into grade level planning, or providing campus professional development

To be held at Scottsdale Community College and at the Gateway Trail at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. You will receive classroom tools for learning, 3D Arizona watershed models, infrared heat sensors and Phoenix bird guides.
