Systemic Risk and Opportunity: Alternative Realities in Social and Ecological Systems
Simon Levin
- James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor, Princeton University
Ecologist Simon Levin began his career at Cornell University and has since worked at Princeton for 27 years. Levin also served as a president for the Ecological Society of America and, in 2014, received the National Medal of Science.
Phase transitions between distinct states are common throughout our world, from physical systems to financial systems and our societies. Understanding these transitions and their consequences is crucial for efforts at sustainability and for the development of effective management regimes.
In this talk, Levin will discuss the nature of the challenges, the search for early warning indicators of impending changes, and implications for the design of management strategies.
