Emilio Moran

Emilio Moran joined Michigan State University in January 2013. Before that, he was a Distinguished Professor and the James H. Rudy Professor of Anthropology, Professor of Environmental Sciences, Adjunct Professor of Geography, and Director of the Anthropological Center for Training and Research on Global Environmental Change at Indiana University. Moran is the author of 11 books, 16 edited volumes, and over 200 journal articles and book chapters. His research has been supported by NSF, NIH, NOAA, and NASA for the past two decades. He was appointed for a six-year term to the National Science Board in 2016.

Moran leads an NSF/INFEWS grant looking for sustainable solutions working with engineers, hydrologists, ecologists, and social scientists. In this talk, Moran will discuss the history of hydropower in the North and its current explosive growth in the South, led by China and Brazil. Will the decline of interest since the 1970s in the North repeat itself in the South? Under what conditions does hydropower offer a desirable source of energy? Can new engineering and social-science approaches lead to a more sustainable future for the hydropower sector? These questions will be addressed during the talk.
