Where Does our Waste Go?
Lucas Mariacher
- Zero Waste Coordinator, City of Phoenix
At Arizona State University, our waste is sent to the city of Phoenix for sorting and recycling.
Each year, approximately one million tons of trash are buried at the city of Phoenix’s landfill. In 2013, Phoenix took a stance to address this problem by creating the Reimagine Phoenix initiative.
Through new programs, public and private partnerships and expanding educational outreach, Phoenix aims to divert forty percent of its waste from the landfill by year 2020. In 2016, Phoenix announced an even more ambitious plan to achieve zero waste by year 2050.
In this presentation, Lucas Mariacher will discuss the common misconceptions about recycling, how to recycle properly and how to maximize your recycling efforts in the city and at ASU.
