Energize Phoenix

Transcript

Rick Shangraw: I got called to the White House on Monday and met with Vice President Biden and Secretary of Energy Chu this morning at 10:00 to announce a $25 million grant to the City of Phoenix and Arizona State University in the area of energy efficiency. Now, this is one of the areas that as you know ASU’s very engaged in. Our partner, the City of Phoenix, always had a dream of taking the light rail corridor and thinking about how we could do a better job along the light rail corridor with energy-efficiency issues, all the way from building efficiency, lighting efficiency, social behavioral issues about how people think about energy.

We originally submitted a $75 million proposal. It turned out there were ten times the number of submissions that the Department of Energy thought were gonna be submitted. There were a number of winners. It’s all posted on the DOE website, but we’re fortunate to be one of those winner. The President did have a chance to–I mean, the President had a chance to talk to Vice President Biden about this and Secretary Chu and I think it’s a great honor for ASU to be part of that.
