Biography

Andrew Bernier is a postdoctoral research fellow with the Rob and Melani Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiatives at ASU. Guided by a decade of professional work as a science and sustainability teacher, undergraduate faculty and public radio science correspondent, Andrew’s questions about sustainability often focus on how well we design, organize, run and communicate knowledge systems for sustainability solutions.

Andrew is interested in the design of structures, models and mechanisms to make the UN Sustainable Development Goals more accessible. He also explores how sustainable urban design may help improve the general public’s sustainability competency. His doctoral research in Sustainability Education focused on the writing, design and implementation of a high school sustainability/STEM curriculum based on systems dynamics. His research found students taught through systems design were better apt to understand, perform and enjoy core sustainability competencies. It offered a conceptual model to help students and educators visually map a student’s systems thinking and is in commercial development through ASU’s Venture Devils entrepreneurship program.

Communication has always driven Andrew’s work, starting with hosting and producing a sustainability news magazine radio show in upstate New York, to serving as a reviewer and advisory board member for The Journal of Sustainability Education. Before ASU, Andrew was the first Science and Innovation Correspondent at KJZZ, the NPR affiliate in Phoenix, AZ. He helped establish the Arizona Science Desk, a collaboration between Arizona public radio stations to share science content locally and nationally. Andrew continues to serve local public radio as the News Director and Story Editor of SPOT 127, an award-winning youth media non-profit program serving students of the greater Phoenix area.
