Biography
Dimitrios Stampoulis completed his MSc studies at the University of New Haven (UNH), where he gained substantial expertise in the applications of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in Environmental Sciences. Learning how to efficiently handle and process the vast amounts of environmental observations introduced him to the Remote Sensing Science, which was the primary tool used for his hydrological studies conducted during his Ph.D. degree pursuit at the University of Connecticut (UConn). During this period, he obtained extensive knowledge and experience on studying and understanding the dynamic nature of the hydrologic cycle and its interactions with the environment. Upon completing his PhD studies, he was provided with the unique opportunity to work as a postdoctoral scholar at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). There, he worked for three years where he developed a modeling framework that aims at improving food security in the countries of East Africa. Moreover, he also conducted eco-hydrological studies for the drought-burdened region of East Africa, focusing on the assessment of the hydro-ecological vulnerability of the region. Dimitrios then worked as an Assistant Research Scientist at the University of California-Los Angeles in collaboration with JPL, where he focused on building a high-resolution modeling system that enables data assimilation of the best available remotely sensed or ground-based hydrological observations to comprehensively map and quantify all freshwater resources available in all states west of the Continental Divide. Currently, as an Associate Research Scientist at the Arizona State University, he works on an interdisciplinary project that aims at enhancing agricultural land use decision making as well as informing the best water resources management practices and allocation in the context of climate and socio-economic changes.
