Biography
Ellen Murray Meissinger joined the ASU School of Art faculty in 1986 as Professor of Drawing and Painting. She currently supervises one of the largest watercolor and water-based media art programs in the country. As a visual artist and scholar Professor Murray studies threats to the environment and ways to use perception and visual narrative to help increase public awareness. Her interdisciplinary artistic practice poses important questions related to critical environmental, social, economic, and human issues at the intersection of art, science, and sustainability. Water as important resource and natural force, and its role in determining structures, creating and destroying environments, and sustaining ecosystems is a major research interest. Professor Murray’s artworks have been exhibited in over 100 international and national art exhibitions. She is the recipient of a Mid–America Arts Alliance Grant to support a national travelling exhibition of her artwork and a Katherine H. Herberger Innovative Teaching Grant. Her artworks have received numerous awards and are part of many important private and corporate collections including IBM, and McDonalds Corporation. Murray’s multi-media art installation Deluge, describing the aftermath of the devastating 1966 flood in Florence, Italy, and the world response, was exhibited at the famous Santa Croce Museum in Florence where it was viewed by more than 70 thousand visitors.
