Biography
James (Jim) Buizer is Professor in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment and Founding Director of the Climate Adaptation and International Development Program in the Institute of the Environment at the University of Arizona.
Prior to joining the University of Arizona in 2011, Jim was Senior Science Policy Advisor to Arizona State University (ASU) President Michael Crow and Executive Director for Strategic Institutional Advancement in the Office of the President, where he led the design and establishment of the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability and its School of Sustainability, launched fall 2006. He also held an appointment as Professor of Practice in Climate Adaptation Policy & Institutional Design in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning.
Prior to ASU, Jim served as Director of the Climate and Societal Interactions Office at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for designing and leading NOAA's integrated, multidisciplinary research and applications program positioned at the climate and societal interface, including the Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (RISA) Program, the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), among others.
Jim serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Council for Science and the Environment; as Vice Chairman, Board of Directors of Second Nature, and Member of the Board on Global Strategies of the American Meteorological Society, and Lead Author, International Chapter, Fourth National Climate Assessment. He is an Affiliate Scholar of the ASU Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes.
Buizer co-teaches a graduate seminar and practicum on the U.S. National Climate Assessment ad Climate Adaptation.
