Biography

Senior Director, Moore Center for Science, Conservation International; Leads research in scenario analysis and development; Leads the science component of the Blue Energy project that aims to develop and implement viable investment schemes for the hydropower generation sector to maintain/enhance hydrological benefits provided by global cloud forests; Leads biophysical assessment and modeling of ecosystem services for natural capital accounting and mapping, e.g., for the Ecosystem Valuation Assessment (EVA) program which conducted a Moore Foundation funded pilot with the government of Peru; Until recently, under the Moore Innovation Fund, coordinated efforts for the Sustainable Landscapes Forecasting Lab project that developed conceptual models for simulating interactions between environmental and human systems to support sustainable development at a landscape level; Also until recently, served as a principal investigator on the Attaining Sustainable Services from Ecosystems (ASSETS) project funded through the UK government’s Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation Programme (ESPA) – this project aimed to explicitly quantify the linkages between the ecosystem services and food security and nutritional health for the rural poor living at the forest-agricultural interface in Colombia, Peru and Malawi; In the past, played a key role in the development and application of the Artificial Intelligence for Ecosystem Services (ARIES) – an analytical modeling platform developed under National Science Foundation (NSF) funding, for mapping and quantifying ecosystem services.

Professor of Practice, Center of Biodiversity Outcomes, Arizona State University; Contributes towards integration of scholarship across Arizona State University in interdisciplinary teams with an aim to: 1) protect biodiversity, 2) promote sustainable development, particularly in food production and fisheries and 3) train the next generation of conservation biologists.
