Biography
Pam DeLargy is a public health and population specialist who is rejoining academia after a 20-year career in international development and humanitarian response where she worked in the areas of population and development, environmental change, migration, and women and development, including reproductive health.
As head of United Nations Population Fund’s humanitarian programs, she worked to bring attention to the needs of women and adolescents in emergency situations by leading a number of UN efforts to expand and improve basic standards for humanitarian response and she was among the first within the international humanitarian community to focus on understanding and responding to HIV and conflict and sexual violence in war. She also served for a number of years in Eritrea, Sudan and Ethiopia and is a specialist on the Horn of Africa, where she also did her dissertation research on refugee policies and famine.
Prior to joining Arizona State University, she was Senior Advisor to the UN Special Representative for Migration (London) and a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Global Affairs at the London School of Economics. Her research there focussed on European refugee policy and the cross-Mediterranean migration and she lectured on this issue at a number of European universities.
Ms DeLargy works closely with ASU’s Education for Humanity initiative, which seeks to expand access to higher education to camp-based and urban refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Uganda, Rwanda, and Ethiopia. She is also developing a research collaboration with Sudanese and Ethiopian colleagues on regional migration and health of migrants.
