Biography

Sara Khoeini is an Assistant Research Professor of Transportation Systems in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe, Arizona. She is also the Assistant Director of a USDOT Tier 1 University Transportation Center (UTC) called TOMNET (Teaching Old Models New Tricks). Before joining ASU, Dr. Khoeini was a Research Scientist I at Georgia Institute of Technology. Her doctoral dissertation assessed the distribution of congestion pricing benefits across different socio-demographic groups to clarify the socioeconomic impacts of managed lanes and to enhance congestion pricing travel behavior modeling. Furthermore, she has employed “big data” sources such as license plate data and marketing data for travel behavior analysis and found them a reliable and inexpensive alternative to household travel surveys. Her areas of expertise include urban transportation systems planning; travel behavior analysis; transportation demand modeling and forecasting; geographic information systems; travel survey methods and data collection; sustainability and energy. She has more than ten peer-reviewed publications and has served on multiple projects as principal or co-principal investigator both. She has been awarded the best student paper award at the 2013 Freeway Operation and Managed Lane Conference, held in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Khoeini has also been nominated for the National Center for Sustainable Transportation Student of The Year at Georgia Institute of Technology. Regarding her professional activities, she has been involved with TRB managed lane committee, high school and undergraduate research activities, and peer-reviewing of transportation-related research papers. Dr. Khoeini has her PhD in Civil Engineering with a specialization in transportation systems engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Her Master’s degree focuses on transportation and highway engineering from Clemson University. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from K. N. Toosi University of Technology, Tehran, Iran.
