SRP Waste Diversion
Salt River Project (SRP), a private corporation that delivers electricity and water to over two million people in central Arizona, engaged the
Global Sustainability Solutions Services to help it understand how to maximize its waste diversion potential, increase the amount of materials recycled and reduce the environmental impact caused by its landfill. Waste from two of SRP’s office buildings underwent a process of hand sorting and characterization to determine the types of waste being disposed of by employees in standard bins. Arizona State University used that data to recommend potential cost-effective solutions so that the company could increase their waste diversion rate. If the solutions are implemented, SRP could divert an additional 1.7 million pounds of waste over 10 years, mitigate 79 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and have a positive impact on SRP’s bottom line. ASU President Michael Crow awarded this project the President’s Award for Sustainability in May, 2014.
