It’s been a little over a week since I’ve left Nepal and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to study abroad and learn firsthand in another country that pertains very specifically to what I’m interested in. Going into this experience my main interest was to compare post-earthquake Haiti to post-earthquake Nepal. I wanted to look at similarities and differences between relief response and how sustainable development can play a role in improving the countries whether it’s in infrastructure, agriculture or the environment to be better prepared for future natural disasters.

Nepal_Lumle landslideFor our final product and presentation at Tribhuvan University, each person on the team put together a photo essay of about four to five sentences to capture the moment that impacted us the most. I thought I would share mine as one of my final blog posts. One year has passed since a ferocious landslide swept through the village of Lumle ruthlessly claiming 28 lives and multiple homes.

The Beauty of Nepal

In this post I’d like to share the beauty of the people, culture and land that I s Nepal. By now our team has spent a couple weeks in Nepal and personally, I’m starting to get very used to being here. I’m now accustomed to greeting anyone I pass by in a village with a friendly “Namaste.” The heat and humidity has become bearable. I don’t even want to think about only having a week left in this beautiful country.

This first week in Nepal has been a crash course of how to live in the developing world with three nights on a farm and four nights at village homestays! We’ve eaten fresh Nepali food, used bucket showers, and washed our clothes by hand. If that doesn’t scare you off (and it shouldn’t, it was quite the adventure) consider coming to Nepal next year!

Why Nepal?

Hi everyone!

I’m Maddie Mahnick, I’ll be studying abroad in Nepal this summer with the Global Sustainability Studies Program. I’m sitting in the Tokyo airport right now on my way to Nepal and I am so excited to get there and spend the next three weeks studying sustainability.

Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I chose Nepal for so many reasons. About a year ago, on April 25, 2015, Nepal was hit by a major earthquake (7.8 magnitude) that took way too many lives. I remember hearing about the earthquake on the news and my heart broke for Nepal.
