Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Comparing Outcomes at ASU and the University of Florida

Christopher McCarty

  • Professor of Anthropology, Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Florida

Christopher McCarty specializes in social network research as both a scholar and a leader. He is widely recognized for applying social-network theory to understanding collaboration patterns and designing interventions to spark collaboration across disciplinary silos.

For the past 20 years, interest in cross-disciplinary collaboration has grown in higher education. ASU embarked upon one of the most radical approaches in higher education by reorganizing traditional departments into schools centered around societal and scientific problems. The University of Florida, in part through an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award, used more common approaches such as pilot awards, cross-disciplinary hires, and the establishment of centers where those from many disciplines interact. This talk will compare the outcomes of these two approaches. McCarty will use network models based on publication and evaluate changes and implications for interdisciplinary strategies over time.

Moderated by Elisa Bienenstock, School of Public Affairs at ASU.
