Eden in Iraq: The Wastewater Art Garden Project
Meridel Rubenstein
- Visiting Associate Professor in the School of Art, Design, and Media, at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
Meridel Rubenstein’s artwork has focused on the intersections of nature and culture in relationship to ecological and social imbalance. After a long career exhibiting as a photographic and installation artist, she initiated a project titled Eden in Iraq in 2011 to restore health and grow beauty in the devastated marshes of South Iraq by creating a demonstration Wastewater Garden.
Eden in Iraq is an art, environmental design, and water remediation project in the marshes of S. Iraq that uses wastewater, design and metaphor to create a restorative public art garden for health, ecological education and cultural memory. With support from Nanyang Technological University, Rubenstein has been designing a five-hectare site in the marshes between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers; near the legendary site of the historic Garden of Eden. In this talk, Rubenstein will discuss her artwork initiatives in detail and the impact they will have on the region.
