As a past postdoctoral fellow at University of California, Davis, Dr. Lampert also holds a Ph. D. in Physics of Complex Systems from Weizmann Institute and an M. Sc. In Physics from Ben-Gurion University.

He is a theoretical ecologist interested in general principles that apply to a wide variety of ecosystems at different spatial, temporal and organismal scales.

On the topic of ecosystem management, he is interested in using optimal control and differential game theory to find general principles to guide cost-effective management for restoration of degraded ecosystems. He conducts research in community and spatial ecology as well, investigating how connectivity and migration rates shape multimodal body-size distributions, promote persistence and change the roles of local versus regional biodiversity in predator-prey ecosystems.

Dr. Lampert also explores the research topic of the evolution of social behaviors, where a variety of social behaviors and traits encompass a tradeoff between the competitive abilities of their individual carrier and the reproductive abilities of either (i) the carrier itself (asymmetric traits) or (ii) the neighboring population (cooperative/defective traits). He investigates (i) how asymmetric and cooperative behaviors/traits evolve over a continuum of possible values and whether they exhibit polymorphism (using adaptive dynamics analysis) and (ii) how behavioral plasticity affects interactions and coexistence with other species.
