Biography
Percy Summers, former Conservation International-Center for Biodviersty Outcomes Professor of Practice, is the Director of the Sustainable Landscape Partnership, which aims to establish a public private facility to promote low carbon emission businesses in the Alto Mayo basin in the North Eastern Peruvian Amazon. He has been part of the CI Peru Team since 2009 when he joined as the Ecosystem Services Coordinator leading the identification and study of ecosystem services schemes. Percy has a Ph.D. in Environmental Design and Planning from Virginia Tech, a MSc in Tropical Forestry from the National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA) in Manaus, Brazil, and a Forestry Science degree from North Carolina State University. His Ph.D. thesis followed land use and social change among small landholder farmers in Brazil looking at land use and social change. His MSc thesis focused on the role of coarse woody debris in tropical forest ecosystems. Before joining CI, Percy was part of the Amazon Community-based Natural Resource Management Research Initiative (ACRI) living among indigenous and riverine communities and studying their fisheries and forest management systems. He is an expert in conservation and development issues in the Amazon region with an interdisciplinary lens, integrating the social aspects of conservation with the scientific and technical issues for a wide range of interests from community-based natural resources management to climate change processes. In his spare time, Percy owns a small farm in the foothills of the Yanachaga-Chemillen National Park where he grows ecologically friendly-native fruits and in the neighboring cloud forest a conservation concession.
