NSF – Climate and Large-Scale Dynamics (CLD)

Date Due: open

Amount: Not Specified

Summary: The goals of the Program are to: (i) advance knowledge about the processes that force and regulate the atmosphere’s synoptic and planetary circulation, weather and climate, and (ii) sustain the pool of human resources required for excellence in synoptic and global atmospheric dynamics and climate research. Some of the research topics include general circulation of the stratosphere and troposphere synoptic scale weather phenomena; processes that govern climate, climate variability and change; climate variations and predictability, parameterization of physical processes; numerical methods for use in large-scale weather and climate models; the assembly and analysis of weather and climate data; data assimilation studies; development and use of climate. Can address multidisciplinary problems and be co-reviewed with other NSF programs, which may have target dates or deadlines.

Keywords: climate change, interdisciplinary

NSF – DCL: FY2017 Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy and Water Systems (INFEWS) Funding Opportunity on Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Water

Date Due: Open (FY17: Please check to see if this program is still accepting proposals.)

Amount: Not Specified

Summary: This component of the NSF Innovations at the Nexus of the Food, Energy and Waters Systems (INFEWS) investment is designed to advance a new understanding of the role of the chemistry of nitrogen, phosphorous, and water in the nexus of food, energy and water systems, “INFEWS: N/P/H2O.” While fundamental science and engineering research will underpin solutions to these areas of national and international need, it must also be recognized that technological innovations themselves require resources for development and deployment.

Ostensible solutions to the challenge of N, P, and water supply cannot be premised on the assumption that energy, chemical feedstocks, and other required resources will be available in great abundance.

In FY 2017, the topics of interest in INFEWS: N/P/H2O include innovative, fundamental research to:

  1. advance catalytic methods for the reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia that permit reductions in the energy requirements for fertilizer production;
  2. develop new sensing modalities that will lead to field-deployable, inexpensive, and environmentally and energetically sustainable sensors for real-time monitoring of nitrogen- or phosphorus-containing species as they move, via agricultural run-off, to other water systems; and
  3. develop methods for the selective and efficient detection, sequestration/separation, and recycling of nitrogen and phosphorous species from water (For proposals submitted to CHE, proposals should focus on gaining an understanding of the supramolecular recognition and binding of environmentally-relevant nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing species.); and
  4. develop new materials to optimize the availability of N and control the utilization of P while managing effluents within the context of sustainable energy and preservation of our natural resources

Keywords: food systems, nitrogen, phosphorous

NSF – Cyberinfrastructure for Emerging Science and Engineering Research (CESER)

Date Due: Open

Amount: Not Specified

Summary: The overall goal of the Cyberinfrastructure for Emerging Science and Engineering Research (CESER) program is to foster the development of innovative cyberinfrastructure (CI) technologies and new means of leveraging existing CI resources to catalyze emerging areas of potentially transformative science and engineering research, including NSF priority areas, national strategic initiatives, and international collaborative research.

A key programmatic objective of CESER is to support early-stage efforts by collaborative teams of domain scientists and cyberinfrastructure developers/implementers to identify and address cyberinfrastructure needs in new research areas through the development and deployment of pilot, experimental, and innovative hardware or software systems or other unique cyberinfrastructure activities that enable new pathways to discovery.

Another program objective is to encourage holistic, systematic, and multidisciplinary CI approaches to address new opportunities to enable science and engineering research. Projects that integrate multiple cyberinfrastructure disciplines – such as computing, data infrastructure, software, workflow systems, and networking – to address an emerging scientific challenge are particularly welcomed.

CESER will also support projects that aim to expand the spectrum of research disciplines that, and users who, engage and contribute to a dynamic and enduring national research cyberinfrastructure ecosystem.

Activities proposed to this program should not be appropriate for funding by any other current programs/solicitations, and should be able to demonstrate the potential to evolve into innovative, scalable, highly useful and usable cyberinfrastructure. Eligible projects and unique activities should address a clearly identified and described scientific rationale, explain and support the potential for transformative impacts on science or engineering research, research training, education or broader impacts, and provide a convincing explanation of why the project is not suitable for other NSF programs or solicitations.

Keywords: engineering, innovation, interdisciplinary, cyber

Notes: Before developing a proposal intended for this program, investigators are strongly encouraged to discuss their ideas with the cognizant program officer associated with the CESER program to ensure that CESER is the appropriate venue for the proposal.

(3) the science of dating and measuring the sequence of events and rates of geological processes as manifested in Earth’s past sedimentary and biological (fossil) record

(4) the geologic record of the production, transportation, and deposition of modern and ancient physical and chemical sediments

(5) understanding Earth’s deep-time (pre-Holocene) climate systems.

Keywords: sediments, Paleobiology, geologic time
