Summary: The EAR Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to propose a strong, coherent research program in or across any area of Earth Science within the scope of the Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) programs. The Division of Earth Sciences supports proposals for research geared toward improving the understanding of the structure, composition, and evolution of the Earth, the life it supports, and the processes that govern the formation and behavior of Earth materials. The theme of this solicitation is “issues relating to scale.” Earth Science research addresses processes that operate at different scales (e.g. spatial, temporal, numerical), but many communities are just now starting to study processes across different scales, or how processes operating at one scale translate to another. In addition, fellowship applicants are expected to include a coherent program of professional development activities as part of their proposal.

NSF – Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

Amount: $69,000 max per year for two years for the Fellow

Summary: The National Science Foundation offers postdoctoral research fellowships to provide opportunities for recent doctoral graduates to obtain additional training, to gain research experience under the sponsorship of established scientists, and to broaden their scientific horizons beyond their undergraduate and graduate training. Postdoctoral fellowships are further designed to assist new scientists to direct their research efforts across traditional disciplinary lines and to avail themselves of unique research resources, sites, and facilities, including at foreign locations. NSF seeks to promote the participation of scientists from all segments of the scientific community, including those from under-represented groups, in its research programs and activities; the postdoctoral period is considered to be an important level of professional development in attaining this goal. The goal of the SBE Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (SPRF) program is to enhance the participation of under-represented groups in science and engineering; promote interdisciplinary research; and encourage doctoral-level scientists (who are not yet in full-time positions) to take advantage of the two-year fellowships to prepare for scientific careers in academia, industry or private sector, and government.

NSF – Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER)

Date Due: 7/18/18 for BIO, CISE, EHR, 3rd Wednesday in July annually thereafter; 7/19/18 for ENG, 3rd Thursday in July annually thereafter; 7/20/18 for GEO, MPS, SBE, 3rd Friday in July annually thereafter

Amount: $400,000 minimum over 5 years except BIO, ENG, PLR is $500,000 minimum over 5 years

Summary: This premier program emphasizes the importance the Foundation places on the early development of academic careers dedicated to stimulating the discovery process in which the excitement of research is enhanced by inspired teaching and enthusiastic learning. Effective integration of research and education generates a synergy in which the process of discovery stimulates learning, and assures that the findings and methods of research and education are quickly and effectively communicated in a broader context and to a larger audience. Successful Principal Investigators will propose creative, integrative and effective research and education plans, developed within the context of the mission, goals, and resources of their organizations, while building a firm foundation for a lifetime of contributions to research, education and their integration.

Integration of Research and Education – All CAREER proposals must have an integrated research and education plan at their core. NSF recognizes that there is no single approach to an integrated research and education plan, but encourages all applicants to think creatively about how their research will impact their education goals and, conversely, how their education activities will feed back into their research. These plans should reflect the proposer’s own disciplinary and educational interests and goals, as well as the needs and context of his or her organization. Because there may be different expectations within different disciplinary fields and/or different organizations, a wide range of research and education activities may be appropriate for the CAREER program.

NSF — Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP)

Amount: $1,750,000 to $2,000,000

Summary: The AGEP program goal is to increase the number of historically underrepresented minority faculty, in specific STEM disciplines and STEM education research fields, by advancing knowledge about pathways to career success.

The program objectives include: To support the development, implementation and study of innovative models of doctoral education, postdoctoral training, and faculty advancement for historically underrepresented minorities in specific STEM disciplines and/or STEM education research fields; and to advance knowledge about the underlying issues, policies and practices that have an impact on the participation, transitions and advancement of historically underrepresented minorities in the STEM academy.

The AGEP Transformation Alliance projects are collaborative research projects representing new strategic alliances of institutions and organizations to develop, implement, and study evidence-based models to transform doctoral education, postdoctoral training, and faculty advancement for historically underrepresented minorities in specific STEM disciplines and/or STEM education research fields. Embedded social science and education research contributes to the knowledge base about how transformational models eliminate or mitigate negative factors and promote positive policies and practices for historically underrepresented minorities.
