NSF – Environmental Engineering

Date Due: 10/20/17

Amount: undetermined

Summary: The goal of the Environmental Engineering program is to support transformative research which applies scientific and engineering principles to avoid or minimize solid, liquid, and gaseous discharges, resulting from human activities on land, inland and coastal waters, and air, while promoting resource and energy conservation and recovery. The program also fosters cutting-edge scientific research for identifying, evaluating, and monitoring the waste assimilative capacity of the natural environment and for removing or reducing contaminants from polluted air, water, and soils. Major areas of interest include: 1) enhancing the availability of high quality water supplies and 2) fate and transport of contaminants of emerging concern in air, water, solid waste, and soils.

Water Research Foundation: An Asset Management Framework for Forested and Natural Areas

Date Due: 09/12/17

Amount: $180,000 to $200,000

Summary: The World Resources Institute (WRI) has stated that investing in natural infrastructure, such as forested watersheds, can reduce or avoid built infrastructure costs, and enhance water services and security as part of an integrated system to cost-effectively deliver safe water. Forested watershed management is an important function of some water utilities to manage both the quality and quantity of source waters, helping to regulate water flow, control flood waters, improve water quality, and regulate water temperature. Investment in forested watersheds (land purchase, land management, other) represents an integrated approach to water resource management.

NSF-USDA Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy, and Water – not yet announced for 2018

Date Due: 03/06/17

Amount: $2,500,000

Summary: The overarching goal of INFEWS is to catalyze well-integrated interdisciplinary and convergent research to transform scientific understanding of the FEW nexus (integrating all three components rather than addressing them separately), in order to improve system function and management, address system stress, increase resilience, and ensure sustainability. The NSF INFEWS initiative is designed to attain the following goals:

  • Significantly advance our understanding of the food-energy-water system through quantitative, predictive and computational modeling, including support for relevant cyberinfrastructure;
  • Develop real-time, cyber-enabled interfaces that improve understanding of the behavior of FEW systems and increase decision support capability;
  • Enable research that will lead to innovative solutions to critical FEW systems problems; and
  • Grow the scientific workforce capable of studying and managing the FEW system, through education and other professional development opportunities.

The INFEWS call has 3 tracks (the 4th track from last year has been cancelled) (see the RFP for additional information):

  1. FEW System Modeling
  2. Visualization and Decision Support for Cyber-Human-Physical Systems at the FEW Nexus, and
  3. Research to Enable Innovative Solutions

Keywords: food, energy, water, cyber

Limitations: An individual PI, co-PI, senior personnel or consultant cannot be on more than two proposals, cannot be on more than one proposal per track, can be a lead PI on only one proposal.

NSF — Environmental Chemical Sciences (ECS)

Date Due: 10/31/17

Amount: Not Specified

Summary: The Environmental Chemical Sciences (ECS) Program supports basic research in chemistry that promotes the understanding of natural and anthropogenic chemical processes in our environment.  Projects supported by this program enable fundamentally new avenues of basic research and transformative technologies. The program is particularly interested in studying molecular phenomena on surfaces and interfaces in order to understand the inherently complex and heterogeneous environment.

Projects utilize advanced experimental, modeling and computational approaches, as well as developing new approaches.  Topics include studies of environmental surfaces and interfaces under laboratory conditions, the fundamental properties of water and water solutions important in environmental processes, dissolution, composition, origin and behavior of molecular scale systems under a variety of naturally occurring environmental conditions, chemical reactivity of synthetic nanoparticles and their molecular level interactions with the environment, and application of theoretical models and computational approaches to discover and predict environmental phenomena at the molecular scale.
