NSF – Environmental Sustainability

Date Due: 10/20/17

Amount: undetermined

Summary: The goal of the Environmental Sustainability program is to promote sustainable engineered systems that support human well-being and that are also compatible with sustaining natural (environmental) systems. These systems provide ecological services vital for human survival. Research efforts supported by the program typically consider long time horizons and may incorporate contributions from the social sciences and ethics. The program supports engineering research that seeks to balance society’s need to provide ecological protection and maintain stable economic conditions. The four principle research areas that are supported are: 1) Industrial Ecology, 2) Green Engineering, 3) Ecological Engineering, and 4) Earth Systems Engineering.

NSF – Environmental Engineering

Date Due: 10/20/17

Amount: undetermined

Summary: The goal of the Environmental Engineering program is to support transformative research which applies scientific and engineering principles to avoid or minimize solid, liquid, and gaseous discharges, resulting from human activities on land, inland and coastal waters, and air, while promoting resource and energy conservation and recovery. The program also fosters cutting-edge scientific research for identifying, evaluating, and monitoring the waste assimilative capacity of the natural environment and for removing or reducing contaminants from polluted air, water, and soils. Major areas of interest include: 1) enhancing the availability of high quality water supplies and 2) fate and transport of contaminants of emerging concern in air, water, solid waste, and soils.

Cedar Tree Foundation – Applications for Environmental Education Teacher Professional Development

Date Due: 09/30/17

Amount: $20,000 to $100,000

Summary: The Cedar Tree Foundation is interested in communicating the facts and urgency of environmental issues taught in schools in the United States by supporting organizations that provide summer professional development opportunities for current teachers. We are interested in programs which allow teachers to have an engaging hands-on environmental education experience with a cohort of other teachers, include networking and follow-up activities that support teachers in building their skills and bringing innovative and inspiring environmental stewardship education back to their classrooms in the fall. To this end, the Cedar Tree Foundation invites organizations that provide professional development opportunities for teachers who are working in the school systems to communicate urgency and cultivate stewardship around environmental problems to submit a proposal for funding. Compelling opportunities for school administrators that translate into impact in the classroom or school community will also be considered.

DOE – Innovative Development in Energy-Related Applied Science (IDEAS)

Date Due:  09/30/17

Amount: $500,000

Summary: This FOA provides a continuing opportunity for the rapid support of early-stage applied research to explore innovative new concepts with the potential for transformational and disruptive changes in energy technology. IDEAS awards are intended to be flexible and may take the form of analyses or exploratory research that provides the agency with information useful for the subsequent development of focused technology programs. IDEAS awards may also support proof-of-concept research to develop a unique technology concept, either in an area not currently supported by the agency or as a potential enhancement to an ongoing focused technology program.

Applications must propose concepts that are not covered by open ARPA-E focused FOAs and that also do not represent incremental improvements over existing technology. IDEAS awards are defined as single-phase efforts of durations 12 months or less with a total project cost of $500,000 or less and will be issued through Grants.
